Berlin/Oslo, October 20, 2025 – As European EV adoption accelerates, research from the Norwegian EV Association reveals that half of EV drivers would prefer Plug&Charge as their charging method once they understand the technology, second only to direct bank card payment at 53%.
The Norwegian EV Association, representing 120,000 EV owners in Europe's most mature EV market, is calling on the automotive and charging industries to make Plug&Charge standard across all charging stations and new electric vehicle models throughout Europe.
"Tesla has offered this preferred charging experience to their own customers for over a decade already. It is time for all car manufacturers and charge point operators to follow suit," says Christina Bu, Secretary General of the Norwegian EV Association.
Testing Plug&Charge Across Borders
To showcase widespread availability of Plug&Charge, the Norwegian EV Association will drive a VW ID.Buzz from Oslo to Berlin via Gothenburg and Copenhagen from October 20-22, with the goal of completing the entire journey using only Plug&Charge technology. The route will include charging meetups with the Swedish and Danish EV associations, highlighting the cross-border collaboration needed to deliver seamless charging experiences.
The journey will be documented on LinkedIn, with the team welcomed at Berlin's EUREF Campus, home to Hubject's offices and a leading hub for sustainable mobility innovation.
Berlin-based Hubject, the global leader in EV charging interoperability, has been instrumental in advancing Plug&Charge adoption across Europe. As an ecosystem provider, Hubject enables seamless and secure vehicle-to-charger authentication without requiring apps, payment cards, or charging cards.
"This partnership demonstrates how driver preferences and regulatory momentum are converging around Plug&Charge," said Christian Hahn, CEO of Hubject. "The Norwegian EV Association's research confirms what we're seeing across Europe: drivers want charging to be as simple as plugging in. As AFIR requirements take effect, we're working with CPOs and OEMs to make this seamless experience available across all networks, turning regulatory compliance into genuine customer satisfaction."
Regulatory Momentum Behind User Demand
The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), effective from April 13, 2024, is transforming the technical architecture of charging infrastructure across Europe. The regulation's Delegated Acts introduce ISO 15118 as a foundational standard for enabling Plug&Charge throughout the EU.
Starting January 2026, all newly installed or renovated publicly accessible charging points must support ISO 15118-2. From January 2027, all newly installed or renovated public and private charging points must support ISO 15118-20. Additionally, all publicly accessible charging points for AC and DC, serving both light-duty and heavy-duty electric vehicles, installed or renovated from January 2027 that offer Plug&Charge must comply with both ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20.
